1. The Zero-Click Shift in 2026
Search behaviour has changed more in the last two years than in the previous ten. Independent studies now put the share of Google searches that end without a click on any website at around 60%. The answer is given on the results page itself — in an AI Overview, a featured snippet, a knowledge panel, a map pack, or a “People also ask” box — and the user moves on.
AI Overviews rolled out to India in 2024, in English and Hindi, and they now appear on a large share of informational and many commercial queries. Type “how much does a website cost in Pune” or “best e-commerce platform for a small business in India” and the first thing on the screen is a generated summary with a handful of cited sources. The websites that are cited get a small, highly qualified stream of clicks. The ones that are not cited get nothing, even if they rank #3 organically underneath.
For business owners this feels like a threat — and for content that only rephrases what everyone else already says, it is. But for businesses that have real expertise, real prices and real local presence, it is the biggest opportunity in search since Google Maps. This guide explains how the selection works and what to do about it.
2. How Google’s AI Overviews Choose Their Sources
Traditional ranking weighed backlinks and keyword matches. AI Overviews are built by Google’s Gemini models on top of the normal index, and what they look for when choosing sources is different in emphasis:
- Entity authority. Is your business a recognised entity — consistent name, address and phone across your website, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles, with a clear description of what you do? Google needs to be confident about who is answering before it cites you.
- Passage-level clarity. AI systems extract short passages, not whole pages. A 40–60 word paragraph that directly answers a question, under a heading that states the question, is far more citable than the same information spread across three paragraphs of storytelling.
- Structured data. Schema.org markup (Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, Article, FAQPage) tells the model what a page is, who wrote it, and when it was updated. It removes ambiguity.
- Original information. First-hand data — your actual price ranges, your project timelines, your case results — is something an AI cannot get elsewhere, which makes it valuable to cite.
- Freshness and consistency. Dated, updated content from a source that has published consistently on the topic is trusted over a one-off post.
Notice what is not on the list: keyword density. Repeating “web design company Pune” fourteen times does nothing for an AI model that understands meaning. We cover the broader discipline in our guide to Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).
3. Five Practical GEO Strategies for 2026
- Add the right structured data. Every page should carry Organization or LocalBusiness markup that links back to one canonical entity ID, plus Article/BlogPosting markup with a real author on every post, Service markup on service pages, and FAQPage where you genuinely answer questions on the page. Note that Google stopped showing FAQ rich results for most commercial sites in 2023 and retired HowTo rich results entirely — so add FAQ schema for AI readability, not for star-studded snippets, and do not bother with HowTo.
- Publish original numbers. A page titled “How much does a website cost in Pune?” with real price bands from your own quotes is citable. A page that says “costs vary depending on requirements” is not.
- Write answer-first sections. Put the direct answer in the first two sentences under each H2, then expand. Use the exact question people ask as the heading. This is also the format that wins voice search.
- Build topic clusters, not isolated posts. A hub page for each core service, with supporting articles linked to and from it, tells both Google and AI models that you cover the subject in depth. Our SEO, local SEO, GEO and voice-search articles all link to each other and to our SEO service page for exactly this reason.
- Strengthen the entity off-site. Consistent NAP details, a complete Google Business Profile, listings on Justdial, Sulekha and IndiaMART where relevant, LinkedIn company page, and a Wikidata entry if you qualify. Mentions of your brand name alongside your services — even without links — feed the entity graph.
4. Measuring Success When Clicks Are Falling
If you judge SEO only by sessions in Google Analytics, zero-click search looks like failure. Change the dashboard:
- Impressions and average position in Search Console still show whether you are being surfaced, even when the click does not happen.
- Branded search volume. People who read your answer in an AI Overview often search your name later. Rising branded queries are the clearest sign your entity is being noticed.
- Google Business Profile actions — calls, direction requests, WhatsApp messages and website taps from the profile. For local businesses these routinely exceed website form submissions.
- Lead quality. Track enquiries by source and stage. Visitors arriving from AI citations have usually already compared options and convert faster; fewer clicks with a higher close rate is a good trade.
5. Winning Local Zero-Click Searches in Pune & Mumbai
For service businesses in areas like BKC, Andheri, Vikhroli, Baner, Hinjewadi and Kharadi, zero-click is not a loss at all — the local pack has always been a zero-click feature, and it drives calls. A fully completed Google Business Profile (categories, services with prices, photos, weekly posts, answered Q&A, steady reviews) combined with a location page on your website that carries LocalBusiness schema and area-specific content gives Google everything it needs to show you and let the customer call or WhatsApp directly from the results.
We have a detailed walkthrough in our local SEO guide for Vikhroli businesses, and our local SEO service handles the profile optimisation, citations and review strategy end to end. If you serve several localities, dedicated pages for each — like our own Baner and Andheri pages — work far better than one generic “areas we serve” list, as long as each page says something genuinely specific about that area.
“Zero-click search punishes content that exists only to rank. It rewards businesses that actually know things — their prices, their timelines, their customers’ real questions — and say them plainly.” — Deepali Bamble
6. What to Do This Quarter
You do not need to rebuild your website. In order of impact:
- Audit your Google Business Profile and fix NAP consistency everywhere your business is listed.
- Add Organization/LocalBusiness and Article schema sitewide, with a real author on every post.
- Rewrite the top five pages you want cited so each H2 answers a real question in its first two sentences.
- Publish one page of original data — pricing, timelines, or results — that competitors will not publish.
- Switch your reporting to impressions, branded search and lead quality, and review it monthly.
If you would rather have it done for you, our SEO services now include an AI-visibility audit that checks which of your pages are cited in AI Overviews and ChatGPT search, and where competitors are cited instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a zero-click search?
A zero-click search is one where the user gets their answer directly on the Google results page — from an AI Overview, featured snippet, knowledge panel or local map pack — and never clicks through to a website. Studies now estimate this at roughly 60% of all Google searches.
Why is traditional keyword density failing in 2026?
Google's ranking and AI systems understand meaning, entities and context rather than counting exact phrases. Repeating a keyword adds nothing; what gets rewarded is clear, authoritative answers, original information, structured data and a consistent business entity across the web.
How can my Pune or Mumbai business get featured in Google AI Overviews?
Make your business a clear entity (consistent NAP, complete Google Business Profile, Organization or LocalBusiness schema), write answer-first sections under question-style headings, publish original data such as real prices and timelines, add Article and FAQ schema, and link related content into topic clusters.
Does zero-click SEO reduce organic traffic?
Informational clicks usually fall, yes. But visitors who do click through from an AI citation have already compared options and convert faster, and local businesses gain calls and WhatsApp messages directly from the results page. Measure impressions, branded searches and lead quality rather than sessions alone.
Should I still add FAQ schema if Google no longer shows FAQ rich results?
Yes, as long as the questions and answers are visible on the page. Google limited FAQ rich results to government and health sites in 2023, but the markup still helps AI systems extract your answers cleanly. HowTo schema, on the other hand, was fully retired and is not worth adding.
